Why do so many escalator users stand smack in the middle instead of practicing common-sense etiquette and standing on the right?

People who use escalators don’t have the brains to realize they should stand on the right side, in case someone wants to walk or trot up the escalator.

Instead, people block the way, and don’t even know you’re right behind them until you are practically breathing down their neck and saying virtually right into their ear, “excuse me.”

They then act startled as though realizing that it’s actually possible that someone else is using the device.

This is all indicative of very poor environmental awareness. This applies also to those moving-walkways at airports, or the ones connecting large hotels.

These dead-heads have no clue that other people may be moving faster than them or may want to walk up the escalator.

How lazy are people that they must STAND on an escalator?

If the device is crowded, of course you can’t walk up it. If your leg or foot is injured, you shouldn’t walk up it.

But the truth is, these dead-heads are almost always non-injured, non-elderly, with little in their arms (if anything), free of young children, and often have plenty of room to walk up the escalator.

If you don’t want to walk, fine, but must you plant your body in the middle, blocking people behind you who want to walk up the moving steps?

Jeez! I mean really, what goes on inside the heads of these doofuses? When I use an escalator at airports, malls, wherever in life, I always, without fail, stand or walk on the right side. Always. That’s because unlike all the other people out there, I’m considerate and intelligent.

There’s no law that says you must stay on the right side of an escalator, but this isn’t about legalities. It’s about “smartalities” and being courteous.

Next time you’re on an escalator, stay on the right so that a person who’s not too lazy to climb the steps isn’t blocked by you!
