Ever notice that with every single restaurant that serves ice cream with chocolate cake, the ice cream is always vanilla? Chocolate is never an option.

And the few dining establishments that offer chocolate ice cream do not have chocolate cake.

As a certified chocoholic who recognizes chocolate as a highly effective mood stabilizer, I just cannot figure out why restaurants would serve only vanilla ice cream with chocolate cake.

This also includes restaurants that boast a killer chocolate cake, such as desserts called “Death by Chocolate,” and “Molten Lava Cake,” etc.

Often these desserts have multiple layers, mousse layers, chocolate fudge and shaving, yet come ONLY with vanilla ice cream.

Now correct me if I’m wrong, but wouldn’t a genuine chocolate lover want chocolate ice cream on their cake? The offering of only vanilla is not only insulting, but laughable.

Don’t restaurants realize this?

I wonder how many people who eat chocolate cake with ice cream – at home – actually choose vanilla ice cream.

In fact, on those occasions I’d like ice cream with my chocolate cake, I eat Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Therapy or Chocolate Fudge Brownie. For me, even plain chocolate ice cream won’t do!

I don’t expect any eateries to carry these Ben & Jerry’s flavors, but gee, it absolutely makes NO sense that not even plain “commercial” chocolate ice cream is offered.

What’s up with vanilla?

This phenomenon is universal across the U.S. I’ve been out to eat to many different establishments, and I have yet to come upon a place that offers chocolate ice cream with their chocolate cake or brownie. Yes, this absurd phenomenon also occurs with brownies.

It’s funny how the menu will have this elaborate, hyped-up description of a chocolate dessert, worded to get your mouth dripping with water, and then the last few words are “topped with vanilla ice cream.”

IS THIS A JOKE?

Sure, many people prefer vanilla ice cream on their chocolate cake, but any true chocolate lover (and there’s a LOT of us out there) would want chocolate ice cream. And (gasp!) some of us don’t even like vanilla at ALL.

Chocolate serves as a very effective stress reducer for many people. Some women claim that it is the perfect food for that time of month or for helping them deal with heartbreak. It’s a classic binge food for both women and men.

Some even claim that it has antidepressant properties and is as effective for them as is a pharmaceutical approach to dealing with depression.

A smart restaurant owner will have both chocolate and vanilla ice cream on the menu.

And please, don’t be snarky and say something like, “Then why not also have strawberry ice cream or butter pecan ice cream or peach flavored ice cream while you’re at it?”

How many people do you know who prefer a flavor other than vanilla or chocolate on their chocolate cake?

Yes, I’m sure there are those out there who like to put pistachio or bubble-gum flavored ice cream on their chocolate cake.

But it’s a fact that straight vanilla and straight chocolate are among the most commonly preferred choices.

Thus, it makes a lot of sense for restaurants to offer BOTH of these flavors if they can only offer two flavors. If they can offer three flavors?

Well then gee, that’s up for grabs, but I’m sure that mint chocolate chip, and chocolate chip cookie dough, would be pretty good choices.
